Information Warfare: June 3, 2003

In an effective example of information warfare, Indian border troops got local villagers to cooperate in detecting illegal migrants by making the villagers aware of how the migrants caused unemployment by working for lower wages and increased pollution by establishing new villages using the same rivers and streams. The Indian villagers (ethically identical to the illegal migrants from Bangladesh) had only been vaguely aware of these problems, and had previously helped the illegal migrants. The simple information program turned these attitudes around rather quickly.
