Intelligence: What Are They Thinking?

Archives

May 29, 2011:  Pakistan has ordered the closure of three American military intelligence liaison ("fusion") centers along the Afghan border. Pakistan is doing this to express its anger at the May 2nd raid that saw American commandos fly into Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden. However, these three fusion centers are there for the benefit of Pakistani security forces. American intel specialists at these facilities supply their Pakistani counterparts with information (from U.S. satellites, UAVs and other sources) that will assist Pakistani troops in their fight against Islamic terrorists in the tribal territories and Baluchistan. The three centers are also used to coordinate American, Afghan and Pakistani military operations along the border. Shutting these sites down hurts Pakistan more than the United States, and it's a mystery as to what the generals, or Pakistani politicians, are thinking.
