The Chinese Air Force (PLAAF) also has a large number of troops armed and trained for ground combat. The air force controls the airborne forces (nearly 40,000 troops) and over 50,000 base security troops. These are organized into regiments and battalions and assigned to provide security for airbases and other facilities. The base security troops are reported to be well trained and capable. They have a secondary task of providing security for other government installations, if the need arises. The air force also controls most of the anti-aircraft artillery and missiles, as well as the radar warning and electronic warfare forces needed for air defense.
