The US Air Force wants to build a space-based laser to destroy ballistic missiles as the ultimate version of theater missile defense. Scientists indicate that at some wavelengths, a satellite-based laser might be able to destroy a relatively weak target on the ground, and note that mobile missile launchers are notoriously delicate (both electronically and structurally). --Stephen V Cole
