Terrorism: April 14, 2002

Archives

While the Irish Republican Army insists that it is out of the terrorism business, several of its members have been spotted (and three, James Monaghan, Niall Connolly and Martin McCauley, were arrested) in Colombia, providing explosives and training to FARC rebels. The three are still under arrest and facing trial. Meanwhile, the United States is investigating a suspected deal in which the IRA would provide this training in return for drugs. The IRA, like many revolutionary organizations that exist for too long, has turned into a criminal gang and largely controls the drug trade in Ireland. --Stephen V Cole
