A government report on religious strife in the central Nigerian city of Jos states that 915 people died. The fighting began on September 7 as a property dispute in a market place. It got worse on September 11 when many Moslems held public demonstrations in support of the attacks on the World Trade Centers and Pentagon. The local Christians took exception to this.  Police and soldiers eventually restored peace in the city, but the strife has since spread to the countryside, where Christian and Moslem villages battle each other over property ownership, or simply because of the religious difference.

Over 10,000 have died in religious and ethnic fighting since the military dictatorship was overthrown in 1999.

Current attempts to register 60 million voters, to prevent voting fraud, have run afoul of massive attempts to commit voter fraud with the registration system.
