The president made a rare visit to the Moslem north, for a ceremony in Kano. He was met by thousands of demonstrators, and six were said to have died in the resulting violence. Northerners are mad at the prosecution of the Abacha family (of the former dictator, for stealing billions of dollars from the government.) The former dictator and his family were Moslems from the north.

On the Niger border, strife between Christian and Moslem tribes left ten dead (one policemen and nine men believed to be Niger or Chad mercenaries working for one of the warring factions.)
