Thousands of young men rioted in the capital, destroying much property. Eighteen people were killed, hundreds injured and over 200 arrested. The fighting was religion based, with Christian and Moslem gangs going after each other. Three churches and two mosques were burned down. The countries population is 40 percent Christian and 20 percent Moslem. There has rarely been any religious violence. This outbreak had more to do with lots of unemployed young men sitting around idle, than anything else. UN peacekeepers calmed things down after about two days of unrest. The disarmament program apparently worked, as few of the rioters were using firearms. But much damage was done with knives, clubs and machetes.
