Iran: June 12, 2005

Nine bombs went off in the capital, and Ahvaz, the capital of  Khuzestan province, which  borders Iraq. At least eight people were killed, and nearly a hundred wounded. Iranian Arabs are suspected, as there has been tension because of rumors that the government wants to move ethnic Iranians into Khuzestan, to dilute the majority Arab population. Arabs comprise only about two percent of Iran's population, and most of these Arabs are in Khuzestan. Much of Iran's oil production is also in Khuzestan. Only about half of Iran's population are ethnic Iranians (an Indo-European people), the rest are Arabs, Turks and other varieties of Indo-Europeans. The non-Iranian Iranians are always ready to suspect the works of the Iranian majority that dominates the country. The government blames pro-Saddam Hussein groups for the bombs.
