 Iran appears to be supporting Sunni Arab anti-government groups in Iraq. Al Qaeda volunteers, weapons, money and other items are allowed to pass through Iran and into Iraq.  This is nothing new, for Iran long supported the Kurdish al Qaeda affiliate, Ansar al Islam. Al Qaeda is, fundamentally, a hard line Sunni organization that considers Shia Moslems heretics, and subject to persecution. This happened in Afghanistan when al Qaeda and the Taliban ran the place. It's going on in Pakistan as hard line Sunni groups persecute Shia Moslems. But the Iranian Islamic conservatives apparently understand that al Qaeda and the Sunni Arabs cannot defeat the United States in Iraq, but that by supporting those who will fight American troops, more Americans will be die, and the United States will be
