The fighting in Aceh has left at least 3,000 people dead in the past ten months. The government plans to lift martial law in Aceh in two months, but army officials are not sure that the rebels can be rooted out that quickly. The rebels still make life dangerous for government officials and anyone else the rebels suspect of not supporting independence for Aceh. Rebel violence is still killing several people a day and wounding many more.
