 In West Java, two plainclothes policemen were mistaken for thieves and lynched by a mob. Such vigilante justice has been on the increase since the dictatorship was overthrown in 1998 and police became less effective and more corrupt.

Singapore has accused Indonesia (as well as Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines) as being reluctant to pursue known al Qaeda terrorists hiding in their nations.
