Three soldiers and one Dayak tribesman were killed in Borneo as the troops attempted to disarm some Dayaks. President Wahid is finally making some moves to avoid getting impeached. He has announced arrests of corrupt government officials and has asked to meet with legislative leaders to work out some way to avoid a crises. Ever since he was elected president, Wahid has disappointed his followers by his inaction and frequent overseas trips. It was known when he was elected that Wahid was elderly and in poor health. But even Wahid said he would overcome these problems. But for most of his tenure so far, he hasn't. Thus ethnic, separatist and religious violence spread unchecked, as did corruption. In Aceh, a rebel grenade attack left one dead and twelve wounded. This violence was in north Aceh, where the government thought it had worked out a deal with the rebels for a peaceful security deal in the area where natural gas facilities are. But more hard line rebels did not agree.
