Indonesia warned that if peacekeepers crossed into West Timor, they would have to fight the Indonesian army. It is feared that anti-independence militias may use West Timor for bases from which they would launch guerilla attacks into East Timor. As Indonesian troops left East Timor, many handed their weapons over to the militias. The peacekeepers are now seizing these weapons when they find them. The US has demanded that the Indonesians disarm the militias in West Timor, but the Indonesians have not shown much enthusiasm for this.
