In India's northeast tribal territories, 150,000 troops have been deployed to prevent election related violence. The various rebel groups use violence to interfere with the elections.

The Indian armed forces are bracing for a ten percent cut in their $13.8 billion budget. Last year, the budget went up 14 percent, but economic recession has caused the government to cut back. The cutback will probably be at the expense of modernization and training (as it has in the past).
