India-Pakistan: December 16, 2002

Archives

The recent election put Islamic fundamentalists in charge of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). This is a first. The NWFP is largely Pushtun and pro-Taliban. The new provincial government has started cracking down on pornography and racy movies, as well as playing pool in the day time and drinking. The new provincial government is also against any cooperation with American troops hunting al Qaeda or Taliban. But the federal government is handling these operations and the provincial forces risk civil war if they interfere.

The Islamic fundamentalists have been less successful in other parts of Pakistan, and fundamentalist leaders castigate Pakistanis for not holding larger anti-American rallies.

Several clashes in Kashmir left seven dead.
