Rebels attacked a bus station and killed 12 policemen and two civilians. Two rebels were later hunted down and killed. Elsewhere, the state law minister was assassinated by rebels. The minister, Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, was running for reelection. 

In Pakistan, police arrested Islamic militants who were planning to attack US fast food outlets in Karachi. Earlier in the day, Karachi police raided an al Qaeda hideout, killing two men and capturing five more. Most of the captives appeared to be Arabs.  

In Pakistan, the US and Britain closed their embassies for today as a safety measure.
