Pakistani Islamic radicals tried to march on an air base thought to be used by American aircraft. Police killed one protester and arrested hundreds. As one local put it, "anyone with a beard is being picked up."  The protest was organized by a pro-Taliban political party ((JUI, or Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam). The demonstrations in the south have been small, or peaceful.  In Kashmir, eight rebels were killed, including six trying to cross from Pakistan.
