India-Pakistan: September 19, 2001

Archives

Pakistani officials are trying to block Afghani refugees from entering the country. A mob of around 1000 people tried to storm a border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is estimated that there are already some 2 million refugees in squalid camps along the borders of the two countries. Eight Islamic militants where killed by Indian security forces in two separate incidents in Kashmir. In Pakistan, President Pervez Musharraf appealed to his countrymen to support him in his decision to aid the United States in hunting down Osama Bin Ladin. Musharraf used all of the weapons in his rhetorical arsenal. He explained that if Pakistan did not aid the United States that India would use Pakistans refusal to help to establish an anti-Pakistan government in Afghanistan. He further stated that the US was not at war with Islam but terrorism. He also used a historic example and explained that the US was the lesser of two evils, a statement sure not to humor the Bush administration.
