Colombia: December 3, 1999

Archives

The government said they would keep their troops out of the 42,000 rebel controlled "demilitarized zone" in southern Colombia beyond the December 7th expiration of the demilitarized status. The demilitarized zone was allowed to get the rebels to enter peace talks (which have not made any progress over the last six months.) There was no mention about how long the government troops would stay out of the zone, where the rebels have set up their own government.
