China continues to battle against Falungong, increasingly using mental hospitals as a way to punish actual or suspected Falungong members. By putting people in the mental hospitals, it is easier to use drugs to torture and punish victims. 

Taiwan's president continues to be defiant in proclaiming his desire for Taiwanese independence. President Chen Shui-bian also urges Taiwanese to ignore Chinese posturing over the issue.
