Abdelaziz Bouteflika was sworn in  for a second five-year term as president. While Bouteflikas policies of aggressive police and military action, as well as offers of amnesty, has crippled the Islamic rebel organizations, he still has problems with massive corruption in the government, economic stagnation and growing anger among the third of the population that are Berbers (a non-Arab people that have lived in the region for thousands of years). The most difficult opponent will be the corruption, because those most involved in the stealing and double dealing are the president's closest allies and political supporters. Another revolution is just around the corner, it just hasn't been fully organized yet.

Some 110 kilometers east of the capital, a roadside bomb killed two soldiers, showing that some of the Islamic rebels are still at it.
