Afghanistan: June 2, 2004

Archives

Taliban ambushed a car full of foreign and Afghan aid workers in the northwest, and killed five of them. The workers belonged to "Doctors Without Borders", which later decided to pull their foreign medical personnel out of the region where the workers were killed. A local Taliban leader took credit for the killings and said that all foreigners would be killed. Oddly enough, the Taliban are not particularly strong in this area.  The Taliban represent a very conservative slice of the Afghan population, and these people believe foreigners, and foreign ideas, should stay out of Afghanistan. This is one of the reasons Afghanistan is the poorest and most unruly nation in Asia.
