Afghanistan: March 28, 2004

The government announced that presidential elections, originally scheduled for June, will be postponed until September, when they will take place at the same time as legislative elections. Administrative problems with finding and registering all Afghans has delayed the process. Taliban resistance to voting has also been a problem, although less of an obstacle than the administrative ones.

In the southeastern town of Khost, three attacks were made on government soldiers. One attack appeared to be a suicide bomber, whose bomb exploded prematurely. Taliban attacks on government soldiers are increasing throughout southern (pro-Taliban) Afghanistan.
