April 28, 2007:
The Indian
navy has arrived in the Sea of Japan, and is taking part in training exercises
with Russian warships. The Indian flotilla consists of three destroyers, a
corvette and an oiler (tanker). For the training exercises, Russia supplied two
destroyers, a diesel-electric submarine, a coastal missile boat, plus aircraft
and several support ships.
Since 2003, the Russian
and Indian navies have, every two years, sent ships for joint training
exercises. India has been a major customer for Russian weapons since the 1960s.
This includes warships, as well as aircraft and land systems.
