The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has given Boeing a $92.4 million contract to design and conduct eleven test flights of a new hypersonic strike missile that could be launched from a submarine or surface ship. The missile would use a scramjet engine to reach Mach-6, giving the US a greatly reduced response time. Such missiles would be used to engage targets newly discovered by recon systems before those targets could move or hide.--Stephen V Cole
