The International Campaign to Ban Landmines reports that 22 million land mines stockpiled by 50 nations have been destroyed in the last two years. While mines have been used by 11 governments in 20 recent conflicts, they are no longer being deployed as profligately as they were a decade ago. The number of civilians injured by old minefields has fallen sharply because these fields are being found and marked while awaiting clearing.--Stephen V Cole
