Attrition: Austria Cuts Panzer Force In Half

December 18, 2010: In order to save about $16 million a year, Austria will sell or scrap half of the thousand armored vehicles in its armed forces. About a third of the armored vehicles being disposed of are already in storage. Austria is offering to sell the vehicles at attractive prices. All of this stuff is Cold War vintage, but well taken care of. Most of the vehicles were built in Austria, Germany or the United States. The active duty strength of the Austrian Army is about 10,000 troops. But there is a large army reserve that, in wartime, expands the army strength to about 120,000.
