Background

Point of Attack 2 is a civilian version of a computer wargame whose
design was funded by the United States Air Force. In essence, the
apparent goal is to make it into a high-end version of the computer
versions of Harpoon.

Manuals

Online documentation is provided and is only accessible through the
game. This is not the best method of using online documentation in the
reviewer’s opinion. A better option would be to have the manuals
available without having to start up the game.

System

The exact system is not transparent. However, Point of Attack 2 features
a database that is VERY easy to make additions and modifications to. In
one sense it is too easy when using a scrolling mouse. On the other
hand, the inability to copy an item and modify it from there made
platform creation more difficult than it had to be. Still, adding a new
platform or weapon will be almost as easy as using the database editor
that emerged from the Harpoon community, which sets the standard in this
reviewer’s opinion.

Game Features

The game includes 11 scenarios, plus a tutorial. The game is easy to use
and almost seems to run itself. It is very easy to give orders, and the
addition of leaders that can affect a unit’s performance is a good
twist. The game is realistic, and provides options for “fog of war” that
can give one a real idea of what it is like to command battalion-sized
units in combat. One also has options to command aerial units.

The scenario creation setup, though, has its problems. I had multiple
freeze-ups, and this issue is being dealt with through tech support,
which has been most helpful. This does not appear to be a problem with
the simulation, but instead due to a lack of processor power (the
reviewer’s eMachines T2865 has a 2.09 GHz processor, and HPS Simulations
recommends a 2.5 GHz processor). The reviewer also considers the
recommended memory of 512 MB to be low, 1 GB is probably better.

Overview

Point of Attack 2 is a solid simulation. It has superb accuracy, and an
open database to allow the inclusion of newer and hypothetical systems.
That said, one will need a high-end computer with additional memory to
be able to use the simulation to its fullest extent. Other than that,
this simulation is highly recommended.
