Overview/Background

This game covers tactical ground combat in the present era.

Manuals

Online documentation is provided. The manual also provides a scenario guide. The game also includes a number of U.S. Army Field Manuals. Many of these will provide interesting background and tips.

System

The system is not transparent by any stretch. That said, it works well
with the game. It forces people to take logistics and supplies into account – not many games or simulations do that. The interface and commands are a little hard to figure out – but once done, it works well, and allows a stunning level of detail, comparable to Harpoon. Artificial limits on stacking units do not exist – the OPFOR’s artillery and air strikes are more than sufficient to prevent over-concentrating forces on one location. Difficulty can be enhanced by selecting various options.

Game Features

The game supports single-player and several two-player modes (LAN, hotseat, and play-by-e-mail). The artificial intelligence is tough, but can be beaten. The database is very extensive and educational – making this game worth its price. The user interface takes some work to figure out, but once done, it allows the player to give realistic orders. The difficulty is present, but necessary. It also allows one to make a decision about which to kill first – tanks, ATGM vehicles, dismounted units. Units from the near-future (like the XM8 Armored Gun System and the Medium Armored Vehicles) are also present and available.

Scenario editing is possible, but setting victory conditions is difficult – ease in the construction of customized scenarios is the only area which needs major improvement in an otherwise superb game.

Lessons Learned

This lessons learned not only depend on the scenario, but also on what you do as a player. The biggest one is that logistics matter, even though they are not sexy. You run out of ammo, you are dead. Air support and artillery are worth their weight in gold. Command decisions will determine the course of a battle.

Summary

It provides realism and challenging game play for hours on end. The challenging gameplay and the ability to learn much about combat make the game more than a good value for the price. The reference manuals make this game a great tool for those who wish to learn how to command ground forces in combat. This game is highly recommended for all users.
