Sudan: December 15, 2000

The Sudan government arrested around 60 members of the Takfir wal-Hijra Muslim fundamentalist group. (Takfir wal-Hijra translates as "Atonement and Self-Denial" and the organizations believes Islamic law in the Sudan should be backed up with force.) The organization is currently outlawed. The arrested members are accused of being involved in a December 8 massacre where 23 members of the Ansar al-Sunna Muslim sect were murdered during evening prayers. The massacre took place in the village of Jarafa (near Omdurman). (Ansar al-Sunna advocates Islamic law, but without violent imposition.)
