Russia announced that one of it's nuclear submarines, the Oscar class "Kursk" had an accident and was resting on the sea bottom, 500 feet down. The Oscar class are "carrier killers", carrying 24 3M45 ("Shipwreck") supersonic anti-ship missiles. The Kursk entered service in 1995. The US has made several offers of help to Russia to rescue the trapped sailors on the submarine Kursk, but none of these offers have been accepted. Apparently the sailors will not survive beyond August 16th.
