The US is said to be inserting enough equipment for ground troops so that a rapid attack, with about 50,000 troops, could be made on Iraq. It would take about a week to get the additional troops into the Persian Gulf. Such an attack would be made if anti-government groups in Iraq got a viable armed resistance going and need some support before government forces (like the Republican Guard) crushes them.
