Mines are still a major problem, with about a hundred people a month being killed or injured by mines. Most of the mines were put in use by the Russians during the 1980s. There are about 7,200 deminers at work around the country, all by 15 of them Afghans.

Taliban forces attacked a border post and killed an Afghan soldier, and then fled back into Pakistan.
