  Taliban forces attacked Northern Alliance positions in Samagan province and advanced several miles. The Taliban also launched attacks in neighboring Balkh province. Although the Winter snows have closed some mountain passes, it is still possible to attack in some places. In Turkmenistan, UN diplomats brought together Taliban and Northern Alliance representatives for peace talks.
