  Some 5,000 Afghans, trying to flee the fighting in northern Afghanistan, have been prevented from entering Tajikistan by Russian border guards. Winter is closing in and UN air workers are having a hard time dealing with the refugees from the fighting as well as the effects of a long drought in southern Afghanistan. The Winter weather is causing the fighting to slow down, as it usually does.
