"ultra patriotism" also robs the US of chances to guide the UN instead of fight with it. We need to be mindful of other countries with rising status undermining us in the institution that we created. Many of the bickering is over ultra-right wing issues like abortion anyway. This is just my opinion, but every time we refuse to sign international conventions it is because they are 1. a threat to US based MNCs 2. contrary to religious beliefs (such as funding for family planning in 3rd world countries. When the US can move past this kind of ilk and take back the position it once had in the world we can truly call ourselves "world leaders" again.

You support the Kyoto Protocol as a fair treaty? Yes it does fall under your #1, but if support those exemptions you're no friend of the US. Or how about the proposal to give the UN control of the Internet? Or maybe the one that said that US citizens would lose the right to own firearms? Nanheyangrouchuan , the UN is not a democracy and as such should not be given power over democracies.

The U.N. is a joke. Ten Days before 9/11 they hold a conference in Durban, south africa. The ostensible purpose of the U.N. World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and related Intolerance , was to combat intolerance, but it seems it's real agenda was to orchestrate an international assualt on the democracies of the west, more specificly united sates, Britain and Israel. These three nations and them alone were condemmned in speeches and resolutions for their alleged racism, historical involvment in slavery and colonialism. Despite the fact that America and Britain had led the world in combating racism by introducing the idea of racial equality as a basic human right two hundred years earlier and by taking the lead in ending slavery, an instutition that had been universally accepted for three thousand years. Not only was slavery still practiced by muslim regimes in africa ( Which went unmentioned at teh U.N. conference)) but the largest ethnic genocide since WWII had occured in rwanda ten years earlier and was niethera legacey of coloialism nor slavery but a tribal affair. The U.N. itsself had ignored the Rwandans' appeals for intervention to prevent genocide, that could have avoided the slaughter of one million Africans. To be Continued.......
