NIce guys, arent they? Good values, excellent way of setting up their governments, allowing full freedom of expression, AND they get to suppress 50% of their population to boot!

"swhitebull - and the reason for the UN existing is?" The United Nations is just what it says on the tin. There are going to be very many different nations at the table by definition, and they will not all share the same opinions. Of course, Pakistan and Algeria in this case are all but condoning terrorism, which is of course both bad and sadistic; however what would you rather, have diplomatic channels with such nations and listen to what they have to say, or let the redneck spirit in you run wild, and invade them??

..have diplomatic channels with such nations and listen to what they have to say, or let the redneck spirit in you run wild, and invade them... I'll take the latter any day, if it means the difference between preventing a country from becoming an imminent threat in the future - (which WAS WHAT POTUS sais at the State of the Union address, and not that IRAQ WAS an IMMINENT threat, no matter what the spin is) and to halt ameliorate a massive human holocaust against their own people (300,000 mass graves and counting for starters), versus letting a bunch of weaselly-mouthed diplomats - with their pockets getting stuffed by a country trying to evade by using those same diplomatic channels - then sanctimoniously say that sanctions were still working, that there were no terrorist connections with AQ and other groups, that they will just overlook the disbursement of oil for food bribes, that Iraq count quickly reconstitute his WMD programs, and that failed to require Saddam to account for th estockpiles of WMDS that he, himself, had used and had declared. As the Duelfer report says, and that the MSM conveniently overlooks, the report, like David Kay's report, strongly suspects that the missing WMDs were sent to Syria. SO yeah, we sent 200,000 inspectors to Iraq to ensure that Saddam was complying with UNSEC Res 1441. Looks like he was disarmed, so the 200,000 weapons inspectors have done their job admirably. Bottom line - Bush has read Sun Tzu, and Machiavelli, and Clausewitz, or have very smart people who have. You use force as a tool of politics - you DONT put your country's security in the hands of the lunatics that have no interest in seeing YOUR country's security preserved. swhitebull - Although THERE IS ALWAYS another way, Violence is always an option.

My problem is not with the UN, but more with the people that want the UN to be something it's not. I have no problem with the UN as a diplomatic tool (1 of several) or as a forum where nations can contact each other. In such roles the UN fulfills an important function. My main problem is that people want the UN to be a world government. There are (in my opinion) several MAJOR PROBLEMS with that. In my opinion people advocating such proposals have not thought things through.
