Subject: Special Forces Around the World Cooperation?
Iblis    1/8/2004 3:21:09 AM
I would assume the best special forces in the world would share assets, training, and perhaps participate in some of the same missions (ie. Iraq) Would any have any experiences or sources in this regard?

I am also going to go way out on a limb and give my short list of what I think are among the best:

US: SEALS, Marine Recon, Delta, US Army Special Forces.
UK: SAS, SBS
Australia: SAS
Germany: GSG9

Now please remember, this is my first post here. I would really want to focus on the interations of all the world's best, the common missions, and the comraderies (or lack thereof).

Well, what do you think, know, surmise, or can reference?

Who says we don't already cooperate? Of all the forces you mentioned, ALL but the Germans were in Iraq. Instead of Germany, though, we had Poland's GROM, which is building up a surprisingly excellent reputation: link

Thanks Sarge for the interesting link. A very pleasant surprise. The polish people should feel very proud indeed!

"ALL but the Germans were in Iraq." Well that is not correct, the GSG9 was in Iraq as a force to protect members of the German Ambassy and other personell, and it was good that they were there because a convoiy was attacked by Iraqis ... I have also some pictures of the GSG9 in Iraq ... link link But its right, they are only there to protect VIPs not in a kind of battle mission.

I am a Dane myself so naturally I feel you are forgetting the Danish special forces, who have fought with valor and great skill in Afghanistan. They consist primarily of two units: Jægerkorpset (meaning Hunter Corps, build upon and trained by the SAS) and Frømandskorpset (meaning Frog Men Corps, build upon and trained by the US Navy SEALS) Several of them has been awarded with medals for their works, but noone knows what for (they don't call them black ops for nothing, you know) :-)

GSG 9, while a competent Anti-Terrorist unit, are a unit of the German Federal Border Guards, i.e. a police force. German military Special Forces are the KSK, which have been deployed to A-Stan btw. .

A quick comment regarding your post about Danish Special Forces. Denmark has several units of which Jægerkorpset and Frømandskorpset are the most "famous" in Denmark.

Jægerkorpset (Huntercorps) was formed by 2 handpicked Danish Army officers, who participated in the SAS selection course and the US Army Ranger training course. The last time Jægerkorpset participated in the Ranger course was in 1978 and the 2 Hunters that participated, passed as number 1 and 3 of the class.

Frømandskorpset was formed by a Navy officer from the Danish Navy, who during WWII served in the British SBS and 2 other officers of the Navy that went through the US Navy UDT/SEAL training course.

The Navy also have a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol, that operates on Greenland and patrols the uninhabitated parts of Northeast Greenland in 2 mand patrols on dogsleeds.

The Danish Police has a special response unit similar to a SWAT team.

The Danish Home Guard has a Special Support and Reconnaissance company, which supports the Army with Recon missions and personnel for the Force Protection teams.

I hope this clarifies things a bit and I appreciate your positive remarks about the Danish Special Forces. By the way, I'm trying to write a book about the Danish Special Forces and I'm hoping to find a publisher for it here in the States.
