Subject: Koran reading question
sofa    4/21/2006 11:20:53 PM
Can someone help me find any portions of the Koran which set out any humanism or respect for others? It seems to be about killing and surpressing others, while being barbaric to your neighbors and your own family. Hadiths seem worse. Maybe I missed a part.

Sorry for piling on the references, and asking if you'd read the koran. But you denied these things were in the koran! It's easy to find numerous references (there are several online translations of the koran). People are like people everywhere, diverse and yet also very similar in their needs and desires. But reading the koran and seeing it implemented in various regions and across time, there is a mountain of evidence that parts of the world are repressed if not ruined by exposure to the corrupting influence of what islam teaches them, directs them, and asks of them. And it all flows from the Koran.

Actually I have heard enough ridiculous things said about what I believe to wonder about things said about what others believe. In any case from what I gather: A. jihadism plays a role in Islam that is unique to it, and perhaps more then comparative doctrines in other religions B. That is not all islam is. C. "how to beat your wife" types of things are probably concessions to human weakness, not approval of wifebeating. It is not a concession I would give but don't condemn more then necessary, for that is uncharitable. D. some Moslems manage to go whole days without thinking about destroying Zionism, killing infidels, or even beating their wifes. Some even manage several days. E. It is awfully noticeable that we started talking this way when the war began. Where was Islam before this? F. a good portion of our allies or semi-allies are Moslems G. the Russian empire might not have fallen without some Moslems in Afghanistan. We could spare a thought for the enemy of our enemy. H. And no I am not a whiny liberal, nor am I a multiculturalist. Nor do I think that Islam constitutes the best way of life available to men-if I did I would be a Muslim. I. OK?

"Really it looks like you know how to read and translate arabic perfectly."-Scratchie I am interested in how those passages are being implemented in the world we see today. I cannot read ancient arabic. If you read ancient arabic, then you're just the person to explain what those passages 'really' mean.

Can confirm the honour of the Turkish warrior and people. Lost a lot of family at Gallipoli. Those that returned affirmed that the Turkish soldier was brave, skilled and honourable. More so than the Germans in both wars and the Japanese in the Second. Australia always welcomes Turkish people. They look after our Australian war dead as their own as promised by Ataturk. People have misused religious texts of all religions for their own gain since time immemorial. Lived in Indonesia for several years; most Islamic people there fine, just a small group of fanatics that are causing most trouble.
