Subject:
First Century Ben-Laden

There was in the first century a man rather like Ben-Laden. He was a trditional Jew who ranted and raved and persecuted Christians(yes it did go both ways; although alas Christians did it more often)as heretics. He pursued them wherever he could reach them.
His name? Saul of Taursus.
Later he became converted and became a great Christian, known by the name we remember him today: St. Paul.
This does have a point beyond Church History. I have no doubt many of us have ill-feelings toward our enemies. Those things are not good. They will not serve the interests of the Republic. They will not speed the capture of Ben-Laden. They only hurt us. I know it seems vaugely disloyal to America to forgive. It is not. I most certainly think we should continue to pursue and if necessary kill people like Ben-Laden. But we should not hate. Christians are enjoined to love our enemies. And the enemies of the Republic, are also our enemies-my enemies-and therefore subject to forgiveness. Yes that is easy for me to say; I am not a New Yorker. But it is also easy for me to say that a soldier should not run away and abondon his comrades, and a Christian should not deny Christ to save his live; though I have neither been in battle nor captured by terrorists. Still those two statements are still true.
I don't know how many Christians are reading this. Still it is a good thing for everyone to remember. And it is a good thing for me to remember. |
