While I agree that Varyag's most probable uses are as a learning tool; on how to build, or KILL carriers. One doctrinal point that I haven't seen mentioned is one use for the FSU's carriers, as I recall, was SSBN Bastion defense in areas without ice pack cover. It is possible the Chinese are thinking on the same lines since they don't have ice-covered waters nearby. Just a thought.
