| The Navy has historically washed out about 20% of its potential pilots in the pre-commissioning process and another 20% in flight school. Not many folks are washed out after that except in carrier qualifications. About 15% of the people who enter the Strike Fleet Replacement squadrons, where you learn to fly the F-18 or F-14 wash out in training, and another fairly significant percentage, about 10% don't make it through their first cruise, mostly due to bad landing grades on the boat. These numbers go up during drawdowns (1972-78, 1990-94) and go down somewhat during wars or buildups.
The Air force washes out far more people during flight school, but far less before and after.
Even with these rates, if you get the chance to become a Military Pilot, take it. If you think you would like it, you probably will. They try to take the fun out of it, and make it just a job, because it's safer flying that way. Oh, and go for jets too. That's where all the promotions are. |
