Subject: Can someone help me out with F/A-8E info?
skrip00    7/3/2005 11:40:15 AM
link Is it true the the F/A-18E is a dud? That it is worse than the F/A-18C in terms of range, fuel load, and bombload? And is it true it is also less manuverable? On another note... can an F/A-18E take off from a Russian aircraft carrier? Kreml class?

SuperBug isn't a Tomcat, but it has considerably more range, payload and carry back capasity (it can land with precious GBUs under wings, no need to jettison before landing to CV) than F/A-18C. Hornet is not really a supersonic with A-to-G configuration, no mather A, C or E. Some figures: C E Internal fuel 4,926 kg 6,354 kg Extrenal Fuel 3,053 kg 7,381 kg Engines 2 x 78.3 kN 2 x 97.9 kN Combat cealing 50,000 ft 50,000 ft Max level speed >1.8 M >1.8 M Combat radius (attack) 290 nm (hi-lo-lo-hi) 390 nm (hi-lo-lo-hi) Empty weight 10,810 kg 14,552 kg Max extrenal load 7,031 kg 8,028 kg Hardpoints 9 11 Max Wing Loading 600.8 kg/m2 644.5 kg/m2 Clean Wing Loading 423.5 kg/m2 450.1 kg/m2 Max Power Loading 157 kg/kN 153 kg/kN Clean Power Loading 100 kg/kN 107 kg/kN Sources: www.fas.org and some cross checks (Jane's All the World's Aircraft etc) I have no source, but I think that SuperBug is one of the best high AoA fighters. Mayby loses a dogfight to a F/A-18C due higher power and wing loading, but anyway SuperBug is very manouvarable with A-to-A configuration. To take of from Russian CV? Even the Russians can't get off any A-to-G ordanance from Kuzetsov. Mayby Hornet could take off with 2x9M + 2x120.

The Russkies had cat problems back in the day...don't know if that got completely solved. But a Super might be able to do it...as mechanic said, it's the premiere nonTVC high AoA fighter of today. Calling it a dud is...well wrong. The pilots like it. It has avionics way beyond what the Tomcat had. BUT...the Tomcat is still just DAMN fast...at all altitudes. And had fantastic range. Super Bug doesn't actually have better range than the Tomcat...at least the re-engined ones anyway. BUT, a Super Bug can T/O with more weight than any fighter before, AND can carry more weapons than a Tomcat. Did I mention avionics? Countermeasures...etc. Oh, and LO technology.

But why not to buy Rafales? Higher performances for a really cheaper aircraft... If I well remember, some congressmen proposed that some years ago. ;)

"But why not to buy Rafales?" I think the reason are the same than the french navy didn't buyed hornet when it need it in the 90's. "Higher performances for a really cheaper aircraft..." I'm french, i'm a fan of the Rafale but to date the Rafale isn't available as a A to G naval aircraft. There's only the AOA as a need of french Navy for his CAP. The AoG naval Rafale won't be in dut until 2008 i think and the Navy won't phased out his Super-Etendard before 2014/2016. So saying the Rafale as better performance than the F/A-18E is nonsense. The SuperBug is already fully active and have his AoG and anti-ship capacity ready. "If I well remember, some congressmen proposed that some years ago. ;)" The only thing i remember between Rafale and the US was a proposal of joint developpement of the navy fighter in the beginning of the 90's. It didn't went long 'cause dassault refused the idea. If i understand the french gouvernement getting out of eurofighter (the design didn't answer our need) i'm pretty upset that Dassault didn't gave a thought to a joint develloppement with the US. The US and French need were similar (multirôle embarked fighter for US/French navy with the french air force having had a ground variant) and the minimal respect for taxepayer was to look at it seriously.

Actualy the F2 standard (a-to-a/a-to-g) is joining the air force, navy's Rafales are now 5 years old at F1 standard (a-to-a) because of the need for a higly capable interceptor. Then actual Rafales are on a comparable standard than SupHornet (a-toa/a-to-g). Bye. You are complaining about your tax-payer money !? But you have a cheaper but more efficient fighter, is that to waste money? Dassault rejected a deal of co-developpement? I don't know, but generaly cooperation with the US is a one-direction-highway...

Dassault rejected the joint development of Hornet 2000 (pre F18E) because it would have made Rafale program less feasible with 80 orders less (in fact it was planned 80 Rafale M).The cost of specifique naval version R&D is low (less than 600 m?).In fact it is likely that France would not have gone alone on Rafale without the navy orders. It makes sense for me.
