Subject: Varyag lost in Meditteranean- Fact or PYWAR!?
joemendla@uog.edu/rfk    11/7/2001 2:44:06 AM
CNN reported that the former Rus carrier "Varyag", recently purchased by the Chinois for use as a FLOATING CASINO for money purposes, broke free from her lines and is now a lonely runaway drifting somewhere in the Med. While most commentators view the event as a sad reality of the condition of naval seapower for the former USSR, I am not convinced. My guts, and previous experience against commies, are telling me what the world is watching is nothing more than psychological warfare deception. Given the serious to severe economic constrainst inherent to all socialist and militarized states, especially communist states, China's naval ambitions are better served focusing its scarce resources on deploying a mix of powerful warships based on traditional and radical-innovative designs, each unit optimized for warfare and reflecting the true socialist-communist reality. No nation on earth, not even Great Britain, can challenge American tech superiority in large-deck or amphibious carriers. The Chinese, like the cold-war Russians, Japanese, and Nazis of the past, are good at recognizing where future military developments will occur or be applied, and should focus on supporting their strategies of sea denial with the types and number of ships necessary to challenge the USA in local, strategic, and extrastrategic dimensions other than broad sea control. The greatest mistake these current and former enemies of the US made was to attempt to copycat the US and European navies or air forces without mind to their nations history or capacity for total war.Vital indigenous characteristics or attributes were sacrificed for the sake of externally- perceived national modernity and internationl competition.

Varyag sat in the Black Sea for at least a year before the Turks let her pass then on Nov 1, 2001 she passed the Turkish straits(Bosporous(sp)) broke a tow line around Nov 10, was presumably caught and I haven't heard if she made it yet, or if she could be there yet. The Egyptians won't let her through Suez as I remember so it through the straits of Gibralter(sp?) around Africa. It'll take a while. link has her date of passage posted.
