Subject: super hornet low observable technology
qwertyuiop    5/28/2005 11:02:17 PM
how stealthy is the plane really? by this i mean how close would an enemy have to be to realize that it was a fighter and not just a bird or something else, or would the enemy have to specifically be looking for the hornet? how does this compare to the f-35.

Exact answers are impossible, however it is considered to be less stealthy than the JSF. Detection ranges will vary.

MID's right, it's quite variable. I'd guess a reasonably large and powerful airborne intercept radar like on the F-18, M2000, MiG-29, etc. could probably lock an F-18E carrying a bunch of missiles somewhere around 30-40 miles, lock an almost clean F-18E somewhere around 15-20 miles, and lock a clean F-35 maybe around 5-10 miles (if it can at all). For the really big radars like on the Su-30 and F-15, we're probably talking around 50-70 miles, 25-35 miles, and 10-15 miles, respectively. Displacedjim

Why does a really big radar lock at a shorter distance? Do you have those figures the wrong way round?

I'm not sure what you mean. What I'm saying is that the larger one has more range, and I'm asserting that the Su-30 can track a loaded F-18E at maybe 50 to 70 miles, but a M2000 can track a loaded F-18E at only about 30-40 miles. Those are educated guesses. Based on those guesses, and a typical assumption of RCS numbers and their effect on radar performance, I'm guessing at the F-35 numbers. Displacedjim
