Subject:
Best Maritime Patrol Helicopter

| The S-70B (MH-60R) is a great multi-mission helicopter (MMH) or maritime patrol helicopter (MPH), but the design will always be limited by its airframe size. As a result, I believe the NH Industries NH-90 NFH is the better MPH/MMH. There are other great competitors such as the Agusta-Westland EH-101, but it suffers from the opposite problem, it is so big, nearly as big as Chinook, if size of an average frigate wasn't the issue it would win hands down, but it is. Personnaly, the Sikorsky H-92 SuperHawk is close, but I have doubts about its suitability for military naval operations as it was specifically designed for civillian ops--albeit primarily for the off-shore oil rig market, but I have doubts about a non-purpose built helicopter. The NH-90 NFH seems to achieve the best of both S-70 and the EH-101, it has a large cabin (not really that much smaller than an EH-101, but much bigger than an S-70B), it is modern, and capable of accomodating all the systems necessary for ASW/ASvW, etc...and yet can easily be accommodated aboard even the smallest frigates and some 1000tonne plus corvettes. The performance of the helicopter speaks for itself, and we all know the German's wouldn't buy it if was of poor quality. |
