Subject: Best Maritime Patrol Helicopter
Brock    6/29/2004 3:23:23 AM
The S-70B (MH-60R) is a great multi-mission helicopter (MMH) or maritime patrol helicopter (MPH), but the design will always be limited by its airframe size. As a result, I believe the NH Industries NH-90 NFH is the better MPH/MMH. There are other great competitors such as the Agusta-Westland EH-101, but it suffers from the opposite problem, it is so big, nearly as big as Chinook, if size of an average frigate wasn't the issue it would win hands down, but it is. Personnaly, the Sikorsky H-92 SuperHawk is close, but I have doubts about its suitability for military naval operations as it was specifically designed for civillian ops--albeit primarily for the off-shore oil rig market, but I have doubts about a non-purpose built helicopter. The NH-90 NFH seems to achieve the best of both S-70 and the EH-101, it has a large cabin (not really that much smaller than an EH-101, but much bigger than an S-70B), it is modern, and capable of accomodating all the systems necessary for ASW/ASvW, etc...and yet can easily be accommodated aboard even the smallest frigates and some 1000tonne plus corvettes. The performance of the helicopter speaks for itself, and we all know the German's wouldn't buy it if was of poor quality.

SEAHAWK, some may disagree, but i cant go against my sentimental favourite, plus its a good looker, and very capable.

I don't think the chopper matters very much, provided it has the basic power to do the job: The real issue is the little black boxes they carry.

One of the problems with an overly large or underpowered is recovery characteristics. Having a large helo will almost certainly mean huge rotors. Imagine trying to bring a CH-53 onto a CG in rough seas. Impossible. Same goes for underpowered. If you screw up even the tiniest bit, you get to try out that water survival stuff they teach at the Helo Dunker in API.

thats another plus for seahawk, not a oversized beast, but not an underpowered runt.

The Danish Lynx has for years been underpowered, but in the enviroment of the very cold North Atlantic the greater air density must have been a saving factor. The Harrier has the same problem - it is all right in cold climates, but "hot 'n' high" is a problem.

All hail and bow down to the SH-60R. If it ever gets here. At the dip and with buoys, who needs MPA's? If you figure in hellfire and a forward firing gun, its gonna have all the bases covered. ASW, ASU, you name it. Plenty of power in an already tested airframe. Anyone heard anything new on the joint strike missle?

The AWESOME Aussie Super Seasprite...(oh, how I jest thee), seriously - the Australian Seahawk is a good choice, especially its inherent ship-based targetting autonomy, that was the avionics option that we picked over the standard USN version. Both upgraded RAN/USN rock though!
