Subject: USMC F-35B on carrier
Aces    4/8/2004 12:36:33 AM
Is it possible in the future that USMC might deploy their F-35Bs on USN carrier just like thier VMFA F/A-18Cs currently deployed? Current goal of USN CVW after 2010 does not include the Marines air asset, there will be only USN aircrafts: 12 F/A-18F, 24 F/A-18E and 12 F-35C.

Reason: In the future all Marine pilots will be assigned to the Navy according to the latest CNO directive.

There will be 10 Marine F-35 squadrons assigned to Nimitz class carriers as part of the marine/navy tactical aviation integration plan. The typical carrier air wing will apparently consist of 12 F-18Es, 12 to 14 F-18Fs, 10 navy F-35Cs, and 10 marine F-35B/Cs.

jjfs1, you mentioned F-35C in USMC inventory, it mean that USMC will buy JSF CV? But from what I've heard, USMC have no plan to buy F-35C, USN want to buy less F-35C and buy some of F-35Bs for its own VFA sqn.

Although, it will be great to see F-35B showing it short take-off/landing capability on The Navy super carrier deck instead of currently catapult take-off/hook landing.

personally i think that the marines should let the navy handle its own carrier air wings completely. the marines should only buy f-35c and fly them off aas and other places for the purpose of cas. there is no reason why the corps needs to be involved with aircraft carriers besides just the aas. what happened to the reason for marine air to be direct support of the troops on the ground? if they were on carriers they would be for what the navy admirals wanted, not the grunts. i was never in favor of marine f/a-18s in the first place, the f-35c should be the only fixed wing aircraft (besides maybe some c-130) that the marines fly.

Good idea, makes sense. I'd also like to see more Marine Corp Generals being in charge of Amphibious Groups. I believe we have one right now, but it would be good to make it the norm.

sorry, i said the marines should only buy f-35c thinking that was the stovl, but the stovl is the f-35b which is what i meant in my last post.

You may have actually been right. On the LHA(R), while we don't have a lot of details, it's possible that they will use catapults and arresting wires. The thing is 910+ feet long, so size is not an issue. The B version loses too much payload due to the extra engine in my mind. Rather have a C version.

All Marine pilots are Naval Aviators. As I understand it, all the current F/A-18 squadrons are required to undergo periodic carrier quals. It also gives the Navy Staff more flexibility for deployments, as Navy squadrons have occasionally been replaced by Marines in CAWs. At a guess, I doubt the LHA(R)s will have cats and arresting gear. While the size is there, the gear is weight and space intensive. Why take up the room when you could haul more troops, fuel, supplies and ordnance?
