In the event that the economy sours further, and say civil unrest hits the cities what could the government's response be to clamp down crime, etc etc. Unemployment is 10.2/17.5% and benefits should be over July next year plus severance, medical benis etc. Its also possible the US dollar collapses by July 2010 so further handouts would have no value. Civil disorder is imminent per this skool of thought.

I don't think so.... the US weathered the Great Depression without massive civil unrest and the current "crisis" is nothing in comparison. Do I detect Schadenfreud, Zoo?

Americans in the 21st century are not the same breed that went into the Great depression or WW2 or KOrean war. This is the "I can't take it anymore" - "I want it now" generation. PROOF: Watch what happened after Katrina in New Orleans, robbery pillaging, even cops were thieves. GOG reality is FEMA will have to bring in the military, it will be like Djakarta riots.

The New York City of today is a lot tougher than those weaklings and bigots were.

9-11  is the proof.

This individual who claims he knows American character projects his own biases in his world view on every subject he opines. Never let's facts get in the way of his assertions or delusions. I call that Schadenfraud.

So what can you do? Ignore him.

I am not the exprt here, but in great depression 1 people had more family support and more farm based families and probably more savings than now. Hence unrest spreads fast.

Le Zookeeper    Hamil- after 9-11   11/23/2009 12:00:34 AM
The country rallied and attacked Afghanistan to get the Talebans. So whats that got to do with civil disorder due to economic collapse, I cited Katrina as an example, counter that. 9-11 does not apply here, but some procedures taken after 9-11 may apply unde FEMA, i.e. registering bullet sales, arresting g=en masse, or banning all guns. Hmmm would like if there was an expert here on FEMA procedures. And oh the Talebans are still around and there are plenty of posts herehat show a complete lack of resolve to continue fighting Talebans and would like to negotiate. You like to negotiate with terrorists?

Very punny, H:)
I think the US is a lot more resistant than people think. However, Obama's slogan of Change is a good idea, but if by change you mean a retooling of the financial system and a thorough review of the regulatory environment, i'm afraid that as much as i am rooting for the kid from Menteng, he hasn't taken steps in this direction yet, nor will he.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Obama, in my view; he is a noble man with many noble intentions. A great Indonesian. However, what the US needs right now is someone with in-depth knowledge of the the financial system. Someone who really knows the nitty gritty of the banking system and how to install controls (Australia may serve as a guide in this sector, btw); someone to institute a revised legal framework as well to regulate corporate practices that have run out of control.

Obama is an inspirational leader, someone you want to give a speech before D-Day to the troops; but to have him make the battleplan.... i would leave that to others.... I think even DA would have to agree with me on this one.

There is a financial crisis.... there is a war..... even if people tend to downplay or forget these facts. The US should go on war footing. End the war. Pull the troops out of Afghan overland into Islamabad if need be; take away the nukes then get the hell out and let the whole region fall apart if need be, whatever, but get it over with.

Same with the fianncaial crisis. Deal with it, make some painful decisions but Rethink, Revise then legislate and move on....

That's my two rupiah anyway.
