Subject: Japanese bases- Obama concessions
GLaw    11/13/2009 12:31:00 PM
I realize that the US bases are controversial in Japan, but I have no idea why it has to be difficult, diplomatically.

My stance on it is that the bases are there to protect Japan, and that the value that they provide the US as a forward base is extremely limmited. Its not like we are going to attack China with conventional weapons, for Gods sake.

As far as I am concerned, the bases should be handed over to the Japanese. If they want to allow US soldiers and equipment to inhabit them, fine. If they do not, fine.

If so, then we are screwed.

I don't see a whole lot of an issue here just yet. The new lefty Japanese PM high soaring election rhetoric is meeting the realities of the world much sooner than he had anticipated, then again... what else was he and his supporters to expect! Perhaps this could be a teachable moment for the Obama administration as well?

He probably would have been better off in getting his wife together with Jimmy Carter too discuss UFO's then too be tackling such a subject as this so early on in his Premiership?

Could you explain your position, please?

Do you see bases in Japan as vital to US security needs?  If so, why?

I might be wrong, but I doubt if the US is currently using those bases in any significant capacity in the current wars.  The Japanese are too sensitive and the US is too fearful of stirring up anti-American sentiments.

Two elected total  incompetents, who will be jettisoned soon enough, can join together to make bad policy and can still lead to catastrophe. Daladier and Chamberlain are examples, remember?

I bet you that the majority of Japanese want the US to stay. They don't care about Okinawans, and they certainly see things differently than MFM want to paint otherwise. LDP lost last election due to their chronic incompetency, not because Hatoyama's policy is any better. Only far left and far right in Japan want the US out.

And, by "we," I mean not the US and not Japan. There are things shouldn't be queried and discussed further.
